The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Academic Advising

PRE-VETERINARY

The requirements for entry into veterinary school are different depending on the school to which you apply. It is important that you visit the Health Professions Advising Office (201D Steele) early in your freshman year.  Below are listed the courses required by North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. If you are not a resident of North Carolina, or are a resident, but wish to consider out-of-state schools, you should come to the Health Professions Office and get help specific to your needs.

A course that is recommended, but not required is BIOL 205 (cell biology). While it is not necessary to major in biology, the required and recommended courses fit nicely into this major.

The GRE: NCSU now requires the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). The usual time to take it is in the spring semester of the Junior year. Students should prepare for this test.

Application: Many veterinary schools accept applications through the Veterinary Medical Colleges Application Service (VMCAS). This application should be submitted in the summer before your last year in college.

Extracurricular activities/experience: Experience working in a variety of veterinary settings is an essential part of your credentials. Most veterinary schools place emphasis on this activity and require at least one letter of evaluation from a veterinarian.

Note: NC State University Veterinary School does not interview applicants. Selection is based on applicants' academic record, test scores, experience, and recommendations. It is essential to get good grades from the beginning.
